City of Edessa
Edessa (formerly called parallel Vodena), located at 320 meters altitude. It is a city in central Macedonia in Greece, the capital of the homonymous province and of the prefecture of Pella. The population of the town of Edessa is 18 253, while that of the expanded municipality of Edessa stands at 28.814 inhabitants (2011).
Edessa is 95 km from Thessaloniki and 25 km from Aridea.
The city is a strong element of water (rivers and waterfalls), which is why the names of: Edessa (wedes in Phrygia was the water tower or water) and Vodena (voda in Slavic is water) have the same root.
The city name is Phrygian origin and means “tower / city underwater”.
